Stripe's Metronome Startup block includes a $100,000 billing allotment and 10 million usage events. Metronome is a separate usage-based Billing product and is not included in the default card-processing estimate.

What this comparison can show

The online selling fees comparison can show estimated differences between payment-processing charges and marketplace selling costs, amount received under the same sample sale assumptions, and which platforms have verified data versus which need a custom fee override.

The default US sample can compare PayPal US, Stripe US limited standard online card, Etsy US, and eBay US most categories simple estimates while showing source status for each row.

PayPal vs Stripe vs Etsy vs eBay: why the rows differ

Payment processors vs marketplaces is not a like-for-like business model comparison. The rows differ because payment processors and marketplaces charge different kinds of fees. PayPal and Stripe rows model payment processing charges for receiving money. Etsy and eBay rows model marketplace selling costs, which may include selling fees in addition to payment-related costs.

Use the table to inspect assumptions and source status, not to rank business models. A marketplace may have higher fees but also provide demand, listing tools, buyer trust, and category-specific rules that this calculator does not value.

eBay and PayPal fee comparison notes

Comparison mode uses the same sale inputs across platforms, but PayPal and eBay are separate fee systems. PayPal rows model payment processing charges. eBay rows model marketplace selling fees, so the totals are not the same kind of charge.

eBay managed payments may mean sellers do not always pay PayPal as a separate processor for eBay sales. Do not mix PayPal fees and eBay fees unless the transaction actually uses both.

For UK searches such as eBay and PayPal fees calculator UK, use the PayPal charges UK calculator for domestic PayPal charges. UK eBay rules should only be calculated when official eBay UK seller-fee assumptions are implemented and reviewed. Until then, use the eBay fee calculator with custom override and check the fee source policy.

What this comparison cannot show

It cannot decide the best platform overall. Pricing is only one part of platform choice, and this page does not include all category-specific marketplace fees.

It does not include every account type, subscription, promotion, chargeback, dispute, refund, tax, or currency conversion scenario.

Why marketplaces may look more expensive than payment processors

Marketplaces often include selling or platform fees in addition to payment processing. Payment processors may only charge payment processing fees.

Interpret the comparison with the assumptions shown on the page, especially when one platform has verified data and another needs a custom fee override.

Stripe note

Stripe US is labeled as a Verified limited US estimate because it only covers the Limited US standard online card estimate. Not a complete Stripe pricing model. Use custom fee override if your Stripe pricing differs by card type, payment method, country, currency conversion, product, Connect setup, or custom pricing.

For a USD 100.00 default sample, PayPal US estimates USD 3.98 in fees and USD 96.02 received, Stripe US limited standard online card estimates USD 3.20 in fees and USD 96.80 received, Etsy US estimates USD 9.95 in fees and USD 90.05 received, and eBay US most categories simple estimate shows USD 14.00 in fees and USD 86.00 received.

Lower payment-processing fees do not necessarily mean a better platform overall, because marketplaces may include selling or platform fees in addition to payment processing.

How to compare fairly

Keep the customer payment, shipping charged, product cost, shipping cost, ad cost, seller country, and buyer country consistent when you compare rows. Changing one input can change fee estimates, received amount, and profit.
