Formula used

Required charge = reverse gross-up(target amount received + shipping charged). Amount received = required charge - total fees. Net profit = amount received - product cost - shipping cost - ad cost.

Assumptions
  • Seller country: United States.
  • Currency received: USD.
  • Standard published PayPal US rates.
  • No refunds, disputes, chargebacks, special pricing, Pay Later, QR, APM, micropayments, or currency conversion unless user enters custom fees.
  • Standard credit and debit card payments are included as a verified alternative rule but are not applied by the default PayPal Checkout estimate.
  • Buyer country matches seller country, so currency conversion rules are not included.
  • Tax included is disabled.

When to use reverse fee calculation

Reverse fee calculation is useful when you need an invoice target amount, a freelance payment target, a marketplace payout target, or client billing where the seller wants a fixed net amount.

Choose the platform or custom fee formula that matches the payment you expect, then enter the amount you want to receive after fees.

How reverse calculation works

The calculator estimates the gross amount to charge so that the amount remaining after fees is close to your target received amount.

Simple percentage-plus-fixed formulas can be solved directly. Tiered marketplace formulas may require approximation because the fee can change as the gross amount crosses a threshold.

Example

If your target received amount is USD 100.00 and your fee formula is 3.49% + USD 0.49, the required charge will be higher than USD 100.00 because the fee is deducted from the gross amount.

Limitations

Actual fees may vary by platform, country, card type, marketplace category, currency conversion, subscription, account type, refund, dispute, tax handling, and custom pricing. Results are estimates only.
